You are looking at the most inexpensive way to add an oil mod to your Honda V4. These fit the 1982 - 1988 Honda V65, V45/700, Magnas, Sabres, Interceptors and VF1000 models. I installed this same kit on my V65 Magna 10 years ago. The cams had
pitting on them prior to the installation, but this has stopped since adding the oil mod.
This kit provides the same benefits of higher priced kits at a much lower cost. You can add Teflon stainless hoses later if you desire.
I am a professional engineer with over 25 years experience in tool & fixture designing. I also have been working on Honda V4’s since 1984. I still own my original V65 Magna that I purchased in 1984. I have been restoring
V4’s as a hobby for the last 15 years.
Your bike may or may not develop a cam wear issue, but it will cost over 00 to replace the cams, bearings, & followers. Spending 0 on an oil mod assures that this will never happen. I have seen cams destroyed in as little as 5K miles.
This oil mod has been designed using proven engineering principles. The purpose of an oil mod is to increase the total flow of oil to the upper end of the engine. Flow is the product of volume times pressure. F=V x P. Volume & pressure are inversely related, which means that as one increases the other decreases. Think of this, everyone has placed their finger over the end of a water hose & seen the pressure increase & the water shoots out further. What happens when you remove your finger? You get more flow, but less pressure & the water doesn’t shoot out as far. Which is better? The answer is neither. You want increased pressure & volume. My oil does that by having sizing throughout the entire system that remains constant. This keeps the flow consistent. My oil mods do NOT have a 0.125" hole in the body of the oil mod that goes to a 0.250" id hose, then through a 0.090" banjo bolt hole. This means the pressure & volume is constantly changing, not a good thing in any fluid system.
WHY DO YOU NEED AN OIL MOD?
Honda originally denied there was a cam wear issue, but finally admitted it. They tried several things to fix the issue. The problem was that there were several issues (read below) that could contribute to & cause cam wear. Your bike has some of these issues. The more of them it has, the more likely it will eventually have a cam issue.
Did you know Honda offered replacement cams and bearings on any V4 engine until 1989.
These cams & bearings were matched to each other (blue printed) like race car engine builders do. Manufacturers do not offer replacements unless there is an issue.
Did you know that Honda even replaced entire engines as well as bought some bikes back from the owners.
Did you know that the stock V4 engine only has 3-5 PSI at the cams at idle!!!
The minimum acceptable
in any engine is 10 PSI per 1000 RPM’s.
Did you know that some factory oil lines came partially blocked where they were soldered together. They also had a tendency to crack.
Did you know that Honda increased the id of the factory oil lines for more oil to the cams.
Did you know that that some V4 engines had oil galley plugs come loose & fall out because Honda did not use Loc-Tite on the threads. This created low oil pressure.
Did you know that the 1982-83 cams were not heat treated as hard as they should have & this promotes wear. Cams produced in the 1980’s are very soft when compared to cams in modern bikes.
Did you know that Honda changed the design of the factory banjo bolt because it originally partially blocked the oil flow to the heads.
Did you know that Honda redesigned the cams 8 times in the Honda V4 engines from 1982-1985.
Did you know that Honda redesigned the cam chain tensioner twice from 1982-1986.
Did you know that the unmachined finish on 1982-84 rocker arms did not allow for proper torqueing of the nuts & they came loose & allowed the valve clearance to change.
Did you know that the 2 rear cylinders on a V4 run as much as 50 degrees hotter than the front cylinders? The rear cylinders experience more cam wear than the front.
Honda sent out a service bulletin that recommended a lower temp fan switch. (

Did you know that Honda created a special tool for performing
valve adjustments because of forked rocker arms in the V4. It’s very easy to incorrectly set valve clearances on a V4. Forked rocker arms double the pressure on the cam lobes.
Did you know that Honda’s V4 engine manufacturing in the V4’s resulted in huge v
ariations in cam-to-bearing clearance.
Honda actually changed the manufacturing method of the engines to cam line honing to create more consistent & accurate cam clearances.
Did you know that the 750 & 700 oil pumps flow 25% less oil than the V65 & VF1000 oil pumps? This makes the engine’s bottom end more apt to be oil starved if using too large a hose.
Did you know that as your oil pump wears it will pump less oil volume? So an oiling system that was fine for years may not be able to provide enough oil as the miles increase.
This will result in cam wear. So an engine that has no cam wear today, may develop issues tomorrow.
SUPER EASY INSTALLATION
Cut factory oil line to heads @ 4 inches from where they enter head
Remove remaining factory oil line & install block off bolt.
Screw on oil filter adapter to existing threaded oil filter nipple. No need to remove factory nipple.
Run hoses from adapter to the factory oil lines you cut. Secure with clamps.
Start bike & check for leaks. You are done!!!
